Inscription.

The Peacekeeper (MX) missile, the largest missile shown here, began operations in 1985. Fifty Minuteman III missiles were deactivated and fifty Peacekeeper missiles were placed in the modified Minuteman III silos. The Peacekeeper missile carries ten independently targeted warheads. It is a three stage missile with a diameter of 7 feet 8 inches and weighs 195,000 pounds. The missile is ejected from its silo by high-pressure steam to an altitude of about 300 feet before its rocket engines fire. It is also controlled from an underground control center manned by two missile officers- the men with the "key" that launches the missiles. The missiles cannot be launched without a series of controlled commands and codes, and the direct order of the President. Two launch control officers in each of two separate underground control centers must receive codes and turn their keys to launch a missile.
