F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Laramie County, Wyoming — The American West (Mountains)
Minuteman I and III ICBMs
The Minuteman I missile, the smallest missile, was the first of the Minuteman series at F.E. Warren AFB and was soon replaced by the Minuteman III in the center. The Minuteman is a three stage solid-propellant rocket capable of a speed of 16,000 miles per hour and a range of 5,500 miles. It is smaller and lighter than the Atlas, but with the same speed and range. While the Atlas liquid oxygen fuel rocket had to be fueled just before launch, the Minuteman's solid fuel rockets were always ready for firing. Hence the name "Minuteman". The Minuteman I carried one nuclear warhead while the Minuteman III carries three nuclear warheads capable of being independently targeted. One hundred and fifty Minuteman III missiles are housed in underground silos dispersed over thousands of miles of prairie in Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska to prevent an enemy missile from destroying more than one missile at a time. Two missile officers in each of fifteen underground launch control centers operate ten missiles.
