Polk's Tennessee Battery,
Johnson's (1st) Brig., Cheatham's (2d) Div., Polk's Corps,
Army of the Mississippi.
This battery became engaged here at about 9 a.m., April 6, 1862. Capt. Polk was wounded and five of his guns disabled. One gun, under Sergt. Pirtle, went forward to the Cross Roads where it was lost.

1. Position of Polks Battery
Some have disputed the position of the "all six guns" of Polks Battery. Many reports say that some guns were positioned across the road,under Gen.Braggs orders.Ed Gleesons book "Illinois Rebels" states that some guns were across(West) the Pittsburg-Corinth Rd.in support of the 15th Tenn., with the 2nd Tenn.as infantry support.Polks Battery was ordered to silence Barretts Battery,just West of Shiloh Church.
