6. Eugene Fitch Ware
Eugene Fitch Ware, Commissioner of Pensions, is a poet, but this should not be to his detriment, as he makes a very eminent Pension Commissioner notwithstanding. Under the nom de plume of “Ironquill”, he has composed some very fetching poems one of the most beautiful of which is entitled, “He'll never be broke while his Mother draws her Pension.”
from Around the Capital with Uncle Hank by Thomas Fleming 1902.

7. Dewey was the Morning...
A poem by Eugene Fitch Ware appeared on this 1898 patriotic envelope.
O dewey was the morning
Upon the first of May,
And Dewey was the Admiral
Down in Manilla Bay.
And dewey were the Regent's eyes,
Them orbs of royal blue;
And dewey feel discouraged?
I dew not think we dew.
-- Eugene F. Ware
