Following the Revolutionary War, a treaty with the
Native Americans was drawn at Fort McIntosh in 1785.
The occasion was guarded by a new army unit named
the First American Regiment.
In recognition of its historical origin as America's
first and oldest permanent army, the military unit
posted here was later designated the President's
Guard, known today as the Old Guard Regiment.
