Prairie Home Companions. . The semi-arid plains are home to hundreds of wildlife species. but even species specialty adapted for life on the prairie need water to survive. The South Platte River and nearby State Wildlife Areas provide excellent habitat for a variety of wild creatures.
Visitors on the Watchable Wildlife Trail may be rewarded with views of many animals including deer, raccoons, coyotes, muskrats, foxes, bald eagles, herons or the elusive mountain lion.
During spring and fall migrations, many birds stop to rest and feed. Look for ducks, geese, cranes, pelicans and many species of songbirds.
Although wildlife may not always be seen, don't forget to look down. Who's been making tracks here?
