In memory of
Capt. Curtis Blakeman
and the
Marine Settlement

Just north of here, in 1819, a group of sea captains,
Blakeman, Allen, Breath, Deselherst, and Mead
from Connecticut, arrived and built log cabins,
naming the settlement Marine.
Captain Curtis Blakeman,
our great, great, great grandfather,
built an ox driven mill in 1823,
served in the Illinois state legislature as a Whig, 1822-1826.
He, his wife, and daughter, along with many others,
died in the 1833 cholera epidemic and are buried here.
Curtis Blakeman Jr. was also a legislature
1842-1844 and 1846-1848. Charter member
of the Marine Masonic Lodge in 1859.
Captain in the Civil War.
Built the Cable Mill in 1866.

 
Erected 2002 by the Harris, Udell Cecelia, Roland, Lorna, Chester, Ronald, and Jean Harris-Jarrett.

Marker can be reached from the intersection of Marine Road (County Road 13) and Hunter School Road, on the left when traveling south. This marker is located at Marine City Cemetery. Enter the cemetery by the center access road and head east (up hill). When the center cemetery road crosses the north-south cemetery road you should see the marker on the left side of the center cemetery road. Touch for map. Marker is in this post office area: Marine IL 62061, United States of America. Touch for directions.

My mother is Beulah Blakeman. Her father is Mick Blakeman and his father is Walden Blakeman. His father died when he was a child but he was told his grandfather was a ship's Captain named Curtis Blakeman.
