Inscription. The Lincoln tomb has undergone two reconstructions. The first, undertaken from 1899 to 1901, corrected a failing foundation. the structure was completely dismantled, new foundations were placed and the tomb was re-erected with an additional 15 feet added to the obelisk's height. In September 1901 President Lincoln's remains were placed in a new vault below the floor of the burial chamber. Interior renovations in 1930 and 1931 created decorative hallways leading to the burial chamber with its magnificent marble memorial stone.
