Leesburg in Loudoun County, Virginia — The American South (Mid-Atlantic)
Dairy Barn
This "bank barn" was originally nestled on the side of a hill or "bank." The farmer drove his wagon onto the upper level of the barn from the top of the bank and deposited hay for storage. The dairy herd stayed sheltered below in an area level with the trail leading to the pasture. The farmer could easily drop hay down to his stock from the upper floor of the barn.
The barn now serves as a testimony to the dairy farmers of Virginia who kept the milk trains running daily through Leesburg.
