1. Multiple Burials Marker

Inscription. One of the oldest burial grounds in the Mississippi Valley, St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is still in use. From its beginning in 1789 it has been the custom to make multiple burials in the tombs and vaults when space in a tomb is re-used the remains of previous burials are lowered into a receptacle below the ground level or placed in the back or side of the vault. This practice of re-using burial space has become a custom here and in other cemeteries in New Orleans.
