1. The Jordan Gravestone Marker
Thanks to the dedication, appreciation, love and respect that Ms. Fleta Jordan had for her ancestors, she went to court to save the Jordan gravestone from being removed as a result of the April 20, 1967 Court Order designating the Borough of Carlisle's takeover of the cemetery to become a Memorial Park and Playground, thus removing all gravestones. The gravestone is that of Samuel A. Jordan, Rachel A. Jordan and Annie R. Jordan. Ms. Fleta Jordan lived across the street at 128 West Penn Street, and in view of the Jordan Gravestone.
Samuel A. Jordan was characterized by the citizens of Carlisle as "a most prominent colored citizen; a genial and kind hearted man and a leader among his race." He was employed at the Carlisle Indian School; a member of the Third Presbyterian Church; and the Odd Fellows and Masonic lodges. For many years he was a very active Republican politician in the fourth ward of Carlisle. At his death, he was survived by a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Middleton of Harrisburg; and four brothers: William, John, Joseph and Matthew.
