Location. 39° 31.448′ N, 79° 20.195′ W. Marker is near McHenry, Maryland, in Garrett County. Marker is on Garrett Highway (U.S. 219) south of Lake Shore Drive, on the left when traveling south. Regarding Deep Creek Lake. The 3900-acre Deep Creek Lake with 65 miles of shoreline is nestled in the Allegheny Mountains 2466 feet above sea level just west of the eastern continental divide. Green forested slopes rise all around to peaks in excess of 3000 feet.
In 2000, the State or Maryland purchased Deep Creek Lake from General Public Utility, Inc., the successor owner to the Youghiogheny Hydro Electric Corporation. It is now managed by the Department of Natural Resources.
