Regarding Van Gogh at the Ravoux Inn. Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was born in the Netherlands and displayed an early talent for drawing. He did not take up oil painting until the last decade of a short and mentally troubled life. The most productive period followed his move to France in 1886, where he lived successively in Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy, and Auvers-sur-Oise.

Although Van Gogh’s work was not widely known during his lifetime, he ranks today among the world’s great artists. His Portrait of Dr. Gachet, done while at Auvers-sur-Oise, sold in 1990 for $82.5 million at the Christie’s auction house in New York.

3. Sign with 1890 Photograph
At the right end of the building’s front is this sign, including a photograph taken in the last year of van Gogh’s life. It reads: “On May 20th 1890, Vincent van Gogh arrives at Auvers-sur-Oise. He moves into the Ravoux Inn where his daily board costs 3.50 francs per day. On this picture taken the same year, Adeline, the innkeeper’s daughter (13 years old), is standing in front of the door. Van Gogh paints her portrait three times. In 1954, she recalls Van Gogh’s stay: At home we all respected him. We used to call him familiarly ‘Monsieur Vincent’ (. . .) He would return towards midday for lunch. (. . .) The menu was made up of all that was served in restaurants at the time: meat, vegetables, salad and dessert. He never returned a dish. He was most accommodating.”

French:
On l'appelait familièrement "Monsieur Vincent" (...)
