2. The Baltimore Battery Location

6. Brockenbrough's Battery
During the early phases of the battle, Brockenbrough's Baltimore Battery occupied the position here, in the "elbow" of the West Woods, facing to the northeast. From here, the battery could fire upon the right flank of the advancing 1st Division of the I Federal Corps, moving down the Hagerstown Pike. After 8 a.m., the battery fell back to Hauser Ridge to the west, later confronting the lead elements of Sedgwick's Federals when they attacked through the West Woods.

7. A. Poffenberger Farm and Hauser Ridge
Brockenbrough's Battery relocated to Hauser Ridge, seen here in the distance beyond the A. Poffenberger farm (on the right). From that position, the battery was able to confront the Federals in Sedgwick's Division when they emerged from the West Woods.
