1. First Site of Washington Academy Marker
Inscription. A forerunner of Washington High School, the Academy was founded and built, 1767, under the proprietary laws of 1694, enlarged, 1776, and destroyed by fire, 1797. Originally called Somerset Academy, it was renamed and chartered as Washington Academy, 1779.
 
Erected by Maryland Historical Society.
