River Edge in Bergen County, New Jersey — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
New Bridge
The first “new bridge” erected in 1745. It was a strategic crossing during the Revolution used by Washington’s army during the 1776 retreat. In 1888/89, the wooden span was replaced by this iron swing-bridge, now the oldest such bridge of its kind in New Jersey.

5. Steuben House
This house, built in 1752, is located near the marker on the west side of the New Bridge. Owned by loyalist Jan Zabriskie, it was confiscated by the American government, and served as Gen. Washington's headquarters for several weeks in 1780. It was later given to Maj. Gen. Baron von Steuben to thank him for his service to our country.
