1. Stone Avenue Marker

Marker is mounted horizontally in the sidewalk.

Inscription. Named during Arizona’s Territorial period for Colonel John Finkle Stone (b. ca.1836-d.1869). He was a colonel in the Union Army and owner of the first house on Stone Avenue at McCormick Street. Stone also operated a mine near Apache Pass, where he later died during an Apache attack. Between 1926 and 1990, Stone Avenue was part of U.S. Highways 80 and 89.

Erected 2013 by City of Tucson Historic Preservation Office.
