1. Sims Bridge: A CCC First Marker
Caption: In 1975 Sims Bridge was dedicated to E. Raymond Huber and the men of the Civilian Conservation Corps for their conscientious and untiring work for the Forest Service. (lower right).
It took a bit of grit and determination for the Forest Service and Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) crew to build this sturdy bridge...Raymond Huber, who supervised the project remembers... “I was given a pickup and a plan of a 160-foot suspension bridge... and no real book of regulations... Well, we made our regulations as we went along. We finally worried our way through a completed bridge in September 1933.”
Sims Bridge was renowned as the first major construction project completed by any of the CCC programs throughout the United States. Its initial purpose was to provide access to the east side of the Sacramento River for fire protection.
Feel free to take a stroll. After 41 years of continuous use (1933-1974), Sims Bridge is still safe to walk on and retains its camber and eloquence. (Marker Number 1.)

This suspension bridge, built in 1933 was the first major construction project completed in the U.S, by CCC crews of the 1930’s. It is also the first project supervised by Mr. Huber, who later became a Regional Engineer. The Forest Service will retain the bridge for it’s (sic) historical interest and use by pedestrians...
