S. Pettit served in the U.S. Army during the Civil War and died in the Confederate Prison in Andersonville. He kept a diary that has been published (unedited) as The Diary of a Dead Man. The house was built for Clinton Pettit about 1835. It is one and a half stories, built of fieldstones.

For the 200th anniversary (2018) of the Town of Wilson, the marker was repainted and reoriented to face north-south traffic.
