Winterset in Madison County, Iowa — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
67 Jefferson Street
c.1880
In 1874, in a wood frame building on this lot, Ho Cheung, a Chinese immigrant, ran A.R. Shong & Co., importers and dealers of tea and coffee. They also manufactured cigars and sold tobacco. The City Bakery was here in 1875. From 1885 through the early 1900's, agricultural implements, seeds and harnesses were sold out of the present two story building.
Scores of young men were warned by their parents not to spend time inside the North Side Pool Hall from the 1940's until the 1970's. Many high school boys did not heed those warnings.
The women's clothing store Mode O'Day, followed by Jeanne's kept Winterset's ladies in the latest styles for 28 years until 2004 when the restaurant Cooking from the Heart opened here.
Erected 2008 by Madison County Antique Association.
