Battery 45 was part of the original Dimmock Line. It was eventually renamed Fort lee in honor of the Confederate commander-in-chief.

Located to the east of Forts Gregg and Whitworth, Battery 45 successfully held after the Union breakthrough of April 2. It was later evacuated when the Confederates fled from Petersburg that night.
