Inscription.
The U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship Memorial commemorates the heroic participation of the men and women of North Carolina in the prosecution and victory of the Second World War, and perpetuates the memory of the more than ten thousand North Carolinians who gave their lives in that war.

Location. 34° 14.187′ N, 77° 57.255′ W. Memorial is near Wilmington, North Carolina, in New Hanover County. It is on U.S.S. North Carolina Road 0.4 miles east of Interstate 140, on the left when traveling east. The plaque is attached to the port side of the rear 16-in. gun turret near the ship's National Historic Landmark plaque (authorized January 14, 1986). Touch for map. 2. U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship Memorial (left)
was laid in October of 1937, she was the first battleship to be constructed in sixteen years. She became the first of ten fast battleships to join the American fleet in World War II. NORTH CAROLINA (BB 55) and her sister ship, WASHINGTON (BB 56), comprised the NORTH CAROLINA Class.

The plaque can be seen on the rear gun turret just above the hinge for the anti-aircraft gun, behind the black canister and to the left of the yellow tour sign.

Sitting just in front of the rear gun turret that holds the veteran marker is the bell from an earlier ship also named the U.S.S. North Carolina.
