Text on the Second Tablet:
The brigade formed in two lines on this ground on the morning of September 20, and protected its front with logs. Starkweather's brigade was on its right and King's (Regulars) on its left. It had no battery, but the clear space in its front was enfiladed by two guns of the Fourth Indiana battery of Starkweather's brigade. Its front and left were assaulted heavily during the forenoon. It held its position until the order to withdraw sometime before sunset, while under attack, when it crossed the Kelly field under heavy fire, losing many men by capture. It then partially reformed and retired with the army to Rossville. Strength in action 1st day, 1879 officers and men. Casualties on the 19th and 20th, 732. Percentage of loss, 39.
