Indiana's Tribute
To Her
Thirty-Eighth Regiment Infantry.
Lieutenant Colonel Daniel F. Griffin.
First Brigade (Scribner).
First Division (Baird).
Fourteenth Corps (Thomas).
This regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel F. Griffin commanding, was one of the first in Baird's Division to engage the enemy Saturday morning, September 19th, 1863. It also assisted in withstanding the attack of Cleburne's Division at night.

This monument marks the position held by the regiment from daylight Sunday morning, September 20th, 1863, until ordered to retire at 5:30 p.m. During the day several assaults of the enemy were repulsed.

Killed 13; Wounded 57; Missing 39.

Erected 1897 by State of Indiana. (Marker Number MT-804.)

This monument is located in the national park that preserves the site of the Chickamauga Battlefield, The monument is located near the northern end of the line of mostly Union monuments, markers, and tablets that are situated along the park's Battleline Road. Service, the monument is, “9' x 6' x 14' high, monument has rock-faced base & smooth-faced pedestal. Shaft takes form of blind arch with rock-faced voussoirs surrounding smooth-faced panel containing inscription & state seal. Carved acorn in keystone.”

I used the "Chickamauga Battlefield" map, that I purchased at the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Visitor Center, to determine both the marker number for this monument and the monument's location in relation to the rest of the park's monuments, markers, and tablets. According to the map it provides the, "numerical listing of all monuments, markers, and tablets on the Chickamauga Battlefield (using the Chick-Chatt NMP Monument Numbering System).”
