Inscription. Mt. Malady, the first hospital in the American colonies, was built in Coxendale near Henricus in 1612. It had 40 beds for 80 patients! Many colonists arrived in poor health from their long sea voyage. Others acquired diseases, such as dysentery, typhoid and malaria in the heat and humidity of their first Virginia summer. These colonists could recuperate at Mt Malady, a “retreat for the sick."
