The Sacramento County Historical Society's April 2006 article on the history of the Sisters of Mercy in Sacramento: "...Besides education, the order focused its energies on medical care. In 1896, it purchased the Ridge Home for a hospital, then expanded across the street, opening Mater Misericordiae (Mother of Mercy) Hospital and Nursing School at 23rd and R Streets in 1897. Ridge Home became a home for the aged. The order ministered to many afflicted by the severe flu epidemic in 1918. A new facility, Mercy General Hospital, opened in 1925. Twenty-five years later, Mercy Children’s Hospital opened." (Submitted on December 15, 2015.)
