1. Short Bio of Lt. Col. James M. Deems. James Monroe Deems born in 1818. Before the American Civil War, he was a music educator at Baltimore, Maryland. He was best known for his 1848 composition, Nebuchadnezzar, which was the first American oratorio. Initially the regiment was posted near the bend of the road, where the monument stands today. However by the time the 7th Michigan was engaged at the Phipps' Fence area, the regiment had been moved further east along Low Dutch Road.
