On April 4, 1954 a handful of heroic civilian and military patriots took up arms against the dynastic dictatorship of the Somoza family, were taken prisoner, suffered the most atrocious tortures and were then killed and buried in secret places. Regarding Monument to the Heroes of April 4, 1954. The April 4, 1954 attempt to assassinate Somoza and overthrow his dictatorship failed. Most of the conspirators were jailed and tortured here at Lomas de Tiscapa where Somoza had his Presidential Palace and grounds. The site is now a museum to the Nicaraguan Revolution that eventually ended the Somoza period.
