Regarding Heroes of October 17, 1977. On October 17, 1977 members of the FSLN attacked the National Guard headquarters nearby in Masaya. This attack was part of the offensive which eventually led to the overthrow of Somoza Debayle in 1979.

In this plaza, Masaya was declared to be Cultural Patrimony of the Nation and Birthplace of the Revolution, in solemn and extraordinary session of the National Assembly in order to celebrate the 150th anniversary of being elevated to the category of city on September 2, 1989, a date in which it was also the seat of all three branches of the State, Municipal Mayor's Office, Masaya.
