Inscription. (English text)
In July 1990, East German border guards began systematically demolishing the Berlin Wall. The great majority of Berliners were glad to see this much-hated structure disappear from the centre of the city.

Only the initiative of a few individuals saved the remaining sections of the Wall and the border installations. Berlin placed a conservation order on authentic remains of the Wall and on the border fortifications: As a result, amongst others, several hundred metres of the front and rear barriers, three watchtowers, the customs building at Friedrichstrasse Station, the “Tranenpalast”, have been preserved.
