5. North Bend
This is the rear of the house, facing the James River. The original ca. 1801 portion of the house is the inset, five-bay core fronted by the two-story porch. This once was presumably the front of the residence. It was doubled in size in 1853 and the front is now facing inland on the opposite side of the house from the two-story porch shown. The portions nearest the camera have been modified as recently as the early 1980s, evidenced by the split in the siding on the kitchen wing.
