Beatty's Brigade, Van Cleve's Division, Crittenden's Corps.
September 19, 1863

Captain Alanson J. Stevens, Commanding.
1st Lieutenant Samuel M. McDowell.

About 1 p.m. the Battery with General Samuel Beatty's Brigade at a double-quick moved from near Lee and Gordon's Mill to the left. When near Brotherton's the Brigade formed in double line with the Battery in rear.
The Battery was ordered to follow the Brigade closely and moved in this way one-quarter of a mile, obliquing to the left, when the enemy was encountered. The four smooth bore guns were moved by hand to the front, opened with canister and fired rapidly, but it was impossible to check the advancing enemy. The infantry on the right fell back through the Battery, the horses of three pieces were nearly all shot, and one lumber was blown up. The right half Battery had time to limber up and retire with the infantry. It came into position

on this ridge, and again opened fire, remaining till the ammunition was all expended, when it was compelled to retire. One piece was disabled and abandoned here. The Battery joined the 7th Indiana and encamped for the night. At this place the Battery received two smooth bore cannon which had been captured from the enemy.

More about this marker. I used the "Chickamauga Battlefield" map, that I purchased at the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Visitor Center, to determine both the marker number for this tablet and the tablet's location in relation to the rest of the park's monuments, markers, and tablets. According to the map it provides the, "numerical listing of all monuments, markers, and tablets on the Chickamauga Battlefield (using the Chick-Chatt NMP Monument Numbering System).”
