1. Belmont Marker
Inscription.
Belmont was patented early in the eighteenth century by Thomas Lee, of Stratford. About 1800, Ludwell Lee, an officer in the Revolutionary Army, built the house and he lived here until his death in 1836. Here he entertained Lafayette in 1825. In 1931, Belmont became the home of Patrick J. Hurley, Secretary of War, 1929–1933.

Location. 39° 4.383′ N, 77° 29.118′ W. Marker is near Ashburn, Virginia, in Loudoun County. Marker is at the intersection of Leesburg Pike (Virginia Route 7) and Claiborne Parkway and Landsdowne Boulevard (Local Route 641), on the right when traveling east on Leesburg Pike. The marker is located on the exit ramp off Leesburg Pike onto Landsdowne Boulevard. The Belmont mansion is 6-tenths of a mile south southwest from this marker. Continue west and but turn left immediately on Ridge Road and left again

More about this marker. In late 2008 this marker was moved from the west bound side of Highway 7 to the present location.
 
Regarding Belmont. The Belmont mansion is now the clubhouse of the Belmont Country Club and has been placed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Ludwell Lee was from Westmoreland County, Virginia. French soldier and statesman Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, was commissioned Major General by the Continental Congress. General Lafayette was assigned to the staff of George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Ludwell Lee was aide-de-camp to General Lafayette.

Patrick J. Hurley was a soldier, statesman, and diplomat. He was born in New Mexico in 1883. Served as Colonel in World War I and Brigadier General in World War II. Was Ambassador to China in 1944. Died in 1963.
