1. The Howze House Marker

Inscription. These quarters are named for Major General Robert L. Howze (1864-1926), Commanding General, El Paso Military District and 1st Cavalry Division. During World War I, he commanded the 38th Division and later the 3rd Division. In 1919 General Howze assumed command of the Third Army of Occupation in France. Upon his return to Fort Bliss, he commanded the newly formed 1st Cavalry Division. In 1925, General Howze left Fort Bliss to command the Army's Fifth Corps in Ohio. He died in 1926 and is buried at the West Point Cemetery. Quarters One at 302 Sheridan now serves as the residence of the Commanding General, 1st Armored Divsion and Fort Bliss.
