Inscription. Battery M, 1st Ohio Light Artillery
4 James, 2 3" Rifles.
Stanley's Brigade, Negley's Division, Thomas' Corps.
September 20, 1863.
Captain Frederick Schultz, Commanding.
1st Lieutenant Joseph Hein.
1st Lieutenant Eben P. Sturges.
2d Lieutenant Jacob Ziegler.
About 9 a.m. the Battery was ordered to the front and took position on the left of the Brigade on a hill, but did not fire; changed position several times by order of general Negley. About noon while in this position the Battery was attacked by the enemy and the entire Battery opened upon him, temporarily checking him, and sustaining a loss in the Battery of 4 men wounded, 8 horses killed and wounded, and expended 240 rounds of ammunition, 75 rounds canister and balance shell. The Battery was ordered from this position to Rossville by General Negley, and encamped there for the night.

, Georgia, in Walker County. Marker can be reached from Vittetoe Road west of Glenn-Kelly Road, on the left when traveling west. This tablet is located in the National Military Park that preserves the site of the Chickamauga Battlefield, on a hill in the north east corner of Dyer Field. Parking is available where the Vittetoe Road is blocked to cars and becomes a park trail. The tablet is also visible to the west of the parking area for the South Carolina State Monument that is off the Glenn-Kelly Road. Touch for map.
