Brompton White Oak
Camp Milton Historic Preserve
During the Battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862, the famed Washington Artillery of New Orleans was posted around Marye House, known as Brompton. Confederate Colonial J.B. Walton used the house as his home and headquarters, as he held back seven Union charges. Photos from that date show soldiers resting beneath this tree. Today the home serves as a residence for the president of Mary Washington College. This tree grew from an acorn handpicked from the Brompton White Oak.
