Marker can be reached from West Kennedy Boulevard (State Road 60) east of University Drive, on the right when traveling west. It is located on the grounds of Henry B. Plant Park, a 7.5 acre city park established in 1891 between the Hillsborough River and the Tampa Bay Hotel, now the University of Tampa and Henry B. Plant Museum. Touch for map. More about this marker. The marker is a boulder, into which has been carved the text. The boulder's surface is heavily weathered and in poor condition, leaving much of the words difficult or impossible to read.
Regarding 400th Anniversary of the Landing of Panfilo de Narvaez. The story of how the commemorative stone came to be and its wording was detailed in a 1998 article in The Tampa Tribune, which recalled the 1928 staging of a “Pageant of Progress” by the city of Tampa, to commemorate the landing of the first Europeans to come ashore in the Tampa Bay area, and the first European expedition into the interior of America.

2. 400th Anniversary of the Landing of Panfilo de Narvaez Marker
Mayor Mckay called de Narváez's landing 'an event of tremendous importance in the advance of civilization,' and declared, 'The Spanish people have been leading factors since the beginning of Tampa’s progress.'
The Spanish consul, Javier Meruendano, referred to de Narvaez as a 'heroic explorer...an outstanding figure among conquerors, navigators and missionaries.' He conveyed greetings from King Alfonso XIII of Spain."
