1. International Tennis Hall of Fame Marker
Inscription.
You are standing at the entrance to the Newport Casino, a National Historic Landmark, now home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Built in 1880 as a social club, the name of the property is not indicative of gambling. "Casino" is derived from the Italian word, la casina or "little house." The Newport Casino was designed by McKim, Mead & White and is one of the finest examples of American Shingle Style Architecture.

In 1881, this site was the host to the first United States National Lawn Tennis Championships. In 1915, that tournament was moved to New York and is now known as the US Open.

With the site's great tennis history, Newporter Jimmy Van Alen determined it would be an ideal venue for a tennis museum, and went on to found the Hall of Fame in 1954. Since the Hall of Fame's inception, the highest honor in tennis has been bestowed upon just over 250 individuals from more than 20 nations.

Preserve. Celebrate. Inspire.

Our Mission
The International Tennis Hall of Fame preserves and promotes the history of tennis and celebrates its championships, thereby serving as a vital partner in the growth of tennis
