Inscription.
Born in Virginia, George Boxley, first settler in Adams Township, Hamilton County, came to Indiana, as a fugitive from justice. Accused of helping slaves to escape and fomenting a slave rebellion in 1816 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, Boxley fled from jail aided by his wife Hannah. On the run for 12 years from Ohio to the Missouri Territory, Boxley arrived here about 1828, soon joined by his large family in this wilderness. He staked an 80-acre claim. Credited with establishing the first school in the township, Boxley constructed a log structure nearby where he taught his own children and those of other settlers coming into the area. In 1851, a township school was established nearby. Boxley's son, Caswell, a lawyer as well as a teacher, purchased his father's land in 1859 and along the south edge platted lots for the new town of Sheridan. In front of the cabin he built a fine house that burned in 1997.
