Honramos a los marinos mercantes fallecidos en cumplimiento de su labor de surcar los mares para beneficio del país en el ámbito comercial, productivo y económico y queremos que sus actos trasciendan en el tiempo, para que lleguen a las futuras generaciones

English translation:
We honor the members of the Merchant Marine fallen in fulfillment of their work to sail the seas for the commercial, productive and economic benefit of the country and we want their actions to transcend in time, so that they reach future generations

3. Representative plaques for Mexican Merchant Marine ships lost in World War II

The Potrero del Llano and Faja de Oro were two Mexican oil tankers sunk by Nazi U-boats in the Gulf of Mexico. Their sinking in May 1942 with the loss of 23 members of the Merchant Marine led neutral Mexico to join the Allies and declare war on Germany in June 1942.
