Temple of La Merced
Temple of Mercy
Construction was begun in 1850 by Friar Trinidad Castillo, who didn't live to see his work finished. Following his death, Friars Simón Acosta and José Guerra of the Order of Mercy continued the construction, managing to close the dome of the temple and build the sacristy and outbuildings. Its construction was finally concluded by Friar Felipe Martínez.
The temple was opened by the Order of the Redemption of the Captives in 1870, nonetheless, it wasn't until 1879 that the solemn blessing and formal dedication was carried out. It features a Neo-Classical facade, while inside frescoes decorate the vaulted ceiling. In the nave, you can seen an image of Our Lady of Mercy, on the main altar, which is the work of the sculptor José Mariano Perrusquía.
