1. The King’s Highway Marker

Inscription. By the mid 1700’s a 1,300 mile continuous road linked all thirteen colonies. Called the “King’s Highway” the thoroughfare stretched from Boston, Massachusetts to Charles Town, South Carolina. It took at least two months for wagons averaging about 20-25 miles per day to complete the entire journey. Sections of US Highway 17 follow this original roadbed. In Myrtle Beach, Business 17 is still referred to as Kings (King’s) Highway.
