Regarding Coronel Sebastián Molas. Sebastián Molas Virgilio (1819 - 1853) was a Mexican soldier born in Tizimín, Yucatán. He participated prominently in the Caste War, fighting the indigenous rebels commanded by Cecilio Chi. He also participated as the head of Yucatecan Federalist troops against Centralist government forces during the warlike episodes that followed the pronouncement of the separation of Yucatán from Mexico. He was executed in Mérida after being captured by the Centralist forces. Supposedly his remains are underneath the obelisk.

3. Coronel Sebastián Molas Marker
The obelisk was constructed with a broken tip, as a way to symbolize Coronel Molas' short life. It was built in 1878 under the government of Manuel Romero Ancona. Originally it had a marker that read: "Aquí yacen los restos del coronel Sebastián Molas, héroe de la Guerra de Castas." (English: Here lie the remains of Colonel Sebastián Molas, Hero of the Caste War.)
