1. Mississippi Central R.R. Campaign Marker
Inscription. On December 2, 1862, as the Confederates fell back to the Yalobusha River, Union Gen. U.S. Grant moved his headquarters from Waterford to Abbeville. On the 4th, he moved to Oxford, while his advance crossed the Yocona River. W.T. Sherman's troops camped at College Hill, five miles northwest. On the 8th, Grant met Sherman here to plan an expedition down the Mississippi River to capture Vicksburg. Led by Sherman, the flotilla left Memphis on December 20, the same day the Union depot at Holly Springs was destroyed.
