Sjúkrahús Hvítabandsins
⎯⎯⎯
White Ribbon Hospital
Inscription.
sólstafir kćrleiks vekja göfugt hjarta;
fylgist ţiđ, systur, bćđi í orđi og anda;
ylgeislum skreytiđ vetrarmyrkriđ svarta."
The White Ribbon women's charitable organisation was founded on April 1th 1895. The charity's building here at Skólavörđustígur 37, designed by master builder Arinbjörn Ţorkelsson, was officially opened on February 18th 1934. It was intended to serve as a convalescent home for women after they were discharged from hospital, but due to a shortage of medical facilities in Reykjavík it was converted into a hospital. In 1943 it was presented to the city of Reykjavík together with all its fixtures, fittings and contents. The Hvítabandiđ hospital was the first general hospital operated by the city authorities.
A poem by Gísli Ólafsson, composed when the house was built, includes the following lines:
"See here what the united work of deft hands may achieve -
The sun-rays of love awaken a noble heart;
Go together, sisters, both in word and spirit;
With your rays of warmth decorate the darkness of the winter night."
Erected by Reykjavik City Museum.
