Inscription. Roman engineers built the first monumental domes around the 1st century BCE. Made of stone, they became heavier as they grew larger, and for centuries, dome size was limited by the weight of stone, concrete, and other materials. In the early 20th century, engineers found a way to overcome these limitations with the development of geodesic domes.
