Regarding House and Museum El Beaterio. A 'beata' is a Catholic lay sister, who after further study and time may take vows and become a nun. 'Beatas' live in a 'beaterio'. As the marker mentions, many of the early lay sisters in Santo Domingo were orphans, from poor families or otherwise underprivileged.
