Inscription. The three Cascade Street Docks provided the setting for much of the Bayfront development that followed construction of the Bayfront Parkway. Without them, there would not have been enough area to create the complex of modern activities that have anchored Erie's waterfront renaissance. The docks were originally developed after the Civil War when William Scott moved west from the Sassafras Street Docks to increase Erie's coal/iron ore loading capacity. Erie Bayfront Roadways were extended west and Cascade Street was created to link the new docks with the city. Interestingly, the designers of the three piers oriented the middle pier at an angle to its companions so that it faced true north.
