This section of the Genesee Valley Canal opened as far as Mt. Morris on September 1, 1840. The canal provided a practical means of transporting both goods and people, making Pifford an active commercial center.

Marker is set well back from NY 63. The Genesee Valley Greenway is to the right. It crosses NY 63. This view is northward. The restaurant "Yard of Ale" is off picture to the left.
