Stephen A. Douglas: The Chicago Years
Stephen A. Douglas became a Chicago resident in 1847, moving from central Illinois after his election as U.S. Senator. He intended to build on his lakeside property, named Oakenwald, a gentleman's estate including a mansion, stables, and a gardener's cottage. Political affairs in Washington consumed the senator, however, and only the cottage was ever built.
Worn out by his 1860 campaign for president and desperate efforts to preserve the Union, Douglas returned to Chicago just weeks after the opening of the Civil War to rally Democrats to the cause. He died at the Tremont House on June 3, 1861, at age 48. During the war a portion of his estate became the site of Camp Douglas, a troop depot that later was turned into a camp for Confederate prisoners of war.
